Bee Gees' 1st (Deluxe Version) – Bee GeesView More By Bee Gees Our ReviewThe Brothers Gibb’s first internationally released album, after penetrating their native Australian market with smaller releases, 1st is a fully realized collection of mid-60s pop packed with the requisite Beatles-esque harmonies, tasteful orchestration, psychedelic production experiments, elusive and suggestive lyrics, and radio hits (“New York Mining Disaster 1941,” “Holiday,” “To Love Somebody”) necessary to ensure the group’s reputation as serious pop contenders. Their quick rise to stardom was the result of a stunning maturity beyond their teenaged years (Barry was barely 21, with his younger twin brothers only turning 18). Beyond the self-penned hits, the album also features several creative standouts of the era. “Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You” revels in a Revolver era psychedelia. “One Minute Woman” and “I Can’t See Nobody” are simple orchestrated numbers exhibiting the group’s sharp melodic sense. “Craise Finton Kirk Royal Academy of Arts” shuffles with a playfully recorded “underwater” vocal sound that’s since been imitated by indie-rock bands throughout the years, most notably Guided By Voices. The reissue generously adds rare demos that are musically strong and not just of historical value, as the multiple versions of “Mining Disaster” point out.. Customer ReviewsTrying To Find The Pulse Of America... (4 stars)This is experimental in that the Bee Gees did not know what style would get them radio airplay in the USA. Therefore they experimented with many styles, sometimes "Beatlesque", sometimes "Country", sometimes Ballads, sometimes "Rock", sometimes "Pop". Four songs from this early album got them radio airplay in America (at least in Los Angeles) - "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", &qu Eduardian Pop, Great Melodies (4 stars) Before the Brothers Gibb hit a vein and the motherlode with disco hits, they were very viable competition for the Beatles durng the Rubber Soul era when everyone pulled out their harpsichords; the Stones' "As Tears Go By" comes to mind. So this is not for everybody, but brilliant orchestration, arrangements and harmonies. Red Chair, Fade Away is a very catchy song, about what I don't know. Great to see iTunes finally got the Bee Ge Album Messages (4 stars) If you notice, the album order of songs follows an interesting course, as if the Bee Gees were partially picking titles and putting them together to create an album based on them. For example "I close my eyes" is directly before "I can't see nobody." At least the message in this album, unlike other of their albums is as far as I know G-rated as are their best songs on the album.. BiographyFormed: 1958 in Brisbane, Queensland, AustraliaGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s No popular music act of the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s attracted a more varied audience than the Bee Gees. Beginning in the mid- to late '60s as a Beatlesque ensemble, they quickly developed as songwriters and singers to create a style of their own that carried them from psychedelia to progressive pop. Then, after hitting a popular trough, they reinvented themselves as perhaps the most successful white soul act of all time. What remained a constant...
