Our Review

By 2007, Mary J. Blige had achieved a singular place in the modern- pop music landscape. While she was still regarded by the hip-hop nation as your favorite rapper’s favorite singer, Blige had also become a role model to the legions of American adult women who watch Oprah. Most performers would have trouble bridging these vastly different worlds, but Growing Pains does it effortlessly, and thereby proves that those worlds aren’t so different after all. Blige transcends demographics because she fearlessly presents herself as imperfect — and there isn’t any listener alive who can’t relate to that. She addresses her own self-doubt, anger, and regret on “Hurt Again,” “Roses” and “Mirror,” which makes her anthems of self-empowerment (“Just Fine,” “Nowhere Fast,” “If You Love Me?”) that much more effective. Perhaps most impressive of all is that, in an industry dominated by adolescent tastes, Blige makes being grown-up look sexy. For proof, check “Grown Woman,” a feisty rap song in which the 36-year-old Blige manages to bend the foul-mouthed Ludacris to her will.

BE WARY OF PURCHASE OF THIS ALBUM!! (1 star)
I am currently contacting ITUNES help because this album does no longer have the 3rd Track which is the Just Fine song. The one without the Lil' Mama thats listed as a bonus track IS NOT the original thats on the retail version at the stores. ITUNES messed up and hopefully will fix this issue ASAP and allow me to redownload my copy with the Just Fine original mix listed in its rightful 3rd track position. Do not purchase this album if youre

A life through music (5 stars)
I have always been a fan and am extremely happy with the new album. I don't believe that there has ever been a let down with Mary's albums and this has got to be one of her very best. A life through music is how I see Mary's work. Always honest, always real, always relative! I have been through much in my life and her music has been there through it all! Thank you Mary, for always giving us life through your lyrics.

Biography

Born: January 11, 1971 in New York, NY [The Bronx]
Genre: R&B/Soul
Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, New York childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha Franklin, Blige had little in common stylistically with either of those artists, but like them, she helped adorn soul music with new textures and flavors that inspired a whole generation of musicians....
