With Head To the Sky Earth, Wind & Fire began in earnest their glorious Seventies career. It was the group’s first platinum album, and their first to spawn hit singles — in this case, “Evil” and “Keep Your Head To the Sky.” The two hits were proof of EW&F’s rapid development; they still contained Maurice White’s spectrum-stretching musical interests, but within the parameters of a pop song. Head To Sky was also a leap forward in production technique. It’s the first album that shows that gleaming veneer that would come to be recognized as an EW&F trademark. If funk had started out as an earthy enterprise, then EW&F had devised a way to keep it immaculate and airy, without sacrificing the soul of the music. As proof of his all-loving theory, White runs the band as a democracy. Bassist Verdine White contributes “The World’s a Masquerade” and keyboardist Larry Dunn contributes “Clover,” while the whole band comes together for the Afro-fusion-disco jam “Zanzibar.”

Great album, poor iTunes pricing (4 stars)
The way iTunes has this priced, you pay .99 each for 5 songs, then $4.90 for the song that comes album only. iTunes should lower the price on classics like this with only a few cuts on them.

Zanzibar! (5 stars)
Good Evening: Zanzibar is one of the most glorious songs of the decade. Fortunately, the rest of the music is extremely good, making the download of the entire set worthwhile. As good as their later commercial hits were (and objectively, they were excellent), the very early EWF songs are my favorite. Some of these represent the earliest world beat tunes in the USA, and as such were a revelation--you have no idea what's coming next.

soul soundtrack to a positive state of mind and reflection (5 stars)
this album is so awesome that you forget that its only six songs. if your a fan of neo-soul (live sounding soul) this is definately one of the inspirations. most will probably like the more polished albums, but this is my favorite because its so raw like its live, but tight like the band's been together forever. Zanzibar and Clover are fantastic, but also check The World's a Masquerade. good stuff.
