Our Review

Few albums have a backstory as bizarre as 1978’s Here My Dear. Unable to afford the divorce from his first wife Anna Gordy (sister Motown chief Berry Gordy), Marvin Gaye arranged to give her half the royalties from his next album as a form of alimony. Full of spite for his wife and his record label, Gaye intended to record a lazy, appalling album, but during the process he found himself unable to shut out his true emotions. Therefore Here My Dear ended up being a deeply personal rumination on his marriage. It exudes both anger and relief, and at the same time Gaye appears intoxicated by the memories of years past. In many ways, it is a brooding, depressive album, yes the recordings also have a spacious, warm tone, as if Marvin is opening the door and inviting the listeners to share his private space. It is the most unmitigated testimonial of Gaye’s career, and large parts of the album feel improvised, as if Gaye is living out his feelings in real time. Here My Dear is sober, and at times frighteningly realistic, even as it opens into the celestial planes of “Anna’s Song,” “I Met a Little Girl” and “Falling In Love Again.”

Marvin's Masterpiece (5 stars)
I'm predjudiced about the grandness, enormity, and brilliance of this album. In 1978 having been screwed by a local radio station in Los Angeles, having no job and no prospects Zeola Gaye (Marvin's sister) came to my aid by introducing me to Jan . She was auditioning backup singers for this remarkable album. I got the job along with a brother and sister from San Francisco and the rest is history...Though I never got paid for my work. Singi

HERE MY DEAR (5 stars)
I AM SO GLAD THAT I FINALLY FOUND THIS ALBUM!!!! THIS ONE WILL TAKE YOU WAY BACK THIS IS OF COURSE OLD SCHOOL BUT IT HAS A NEO-SOUL FLAVOR. MARVIN GAYE WROTE THIS ONE AS A RESULT OF A DIVORCE SETTLEMENT FOR HIS WIFE ANNA AND SHE RECEIVED ALL OF THE MONEY FROM THE SALES OF THIS PROJECT....THUS THE TITLE.....HERE MY DEAR IF YOU LOVE MARVIN GAYE YOU WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM ESPECIALLY,EVERYONE NEEDS LOVE AND WHEN DID YOU STOP LOVING ME..THIS MUSIC

And Not A Happy Ending With Jan (4 stars)
In all of the justifiable praise for, and analysis of, Here, My Dear, this album's comment on the status of his relationship with Janis Hunter has been consistently overlooked. While "Falling In Love Again" has Marvin rhapsodizing about his new wife, we all know how that union ended, which was in turmoil at the time of the making of Here, My Dear. Note how "Falling In Love Again" fades into the album closer: a :44 second

One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music.
