Our Review

Always possessed with a sandpaper growl that could add gripping pathos to even the most trivial material, Joe Cocker also often surrounded himself with bland, adult-contemporary arrangements. For Hymn for My Soul, he hit the L.A. studios with producer Ethan Johns, known for his raw, intimate recordings, and a cabal of top-notch session musicians, from drummer Jim Keltner and Tom Petty keyboardist Benmont Tench to Jethro Tull keyboardist Dave Palmer, and Motown bassist Bob Babbitt. Cocker still slicks it up in spots, but within reason. “One Word (Peace)” from the New Orleans based Subdudes spotlights a bevy of backing singers, and the Meters’ “Love is For Me” features a playful call and response that’s pure old school R&B from the Solomon Burke school of emotion. (He ably covers Burke’s “Don’t Give Up On Me.”) Bob Dylan’s “Ring Them Bells,” Stevie Wonder’s “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” and George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness” are interpreted with surprising restraint. Cocker’s hardly reinvented himself; as a veteran, he’s set in his ways. But he’s chosen well amongst his players, producer, and tunes.

Soulful, passionate, with a touch of Joe's edge (3 stars)
Thankfully, Cocker is not your average Joe. Once again Cocker proves this with this latest collection of covers and inspirations. For those of you who have never soaked in Joe's rough but passionate voice and style, you should be pleasantly surprised to discover just why Cocker has endured, and grown, so well in 30-plus years. As usual, Joe has a soulful backing band that helps give his covers a distinctive Joe Cocker signature (and as he h

Wow! (5 stars)
I am much younger than the other reviewers. I have not previously heard Joe Cocker. So keep that in mind. You may have to listen to this with an open mind and even possibly a young perspective. This CD is GREAT! I love the touch of blues!

After starting out as an unsuccessful pop singer (working under the name Vance Arnold), Joe Cocker found his niche singing rock and soul in the pubs of England with his superb backing group, the Grease Band. He hit number one in the U.K. in November 1968 with his version of the Beatles' "A Little Help from My Friends." His career really took off after he sang that song at the Woodstock festival in August 1969. A second British hit came with a version of Leon Russell's "Delta Lady" in the fall of...
