Our Review

The follow-up to Van’s 1978 commercial success Wavelength, 1979’s Into the Music strikes a successful balance between Morrison’s spiritual concerns, his innate use of musical dynamics and his love for straightforward jazz, country and R&B. The first side of the album (tracks one through six) are short, pointed jabs, and among the most joyous music Morrison has created. “Bright Side of the Road,” “Full Force Gale” and “Rolling Hills” extort Morrison’s then current interest in Christianity and are buoyed by a festive rhythm section, horns (arranged by Pee Wee Ellis and Mark Isham) and strings. Side two (tracks seven through ten) forms a dramatic suite. “Angeliou” begins things in low gear, building in intensity as Morrison repeats key phrases until the song resolves into “And the Healing Has Begun,” one of Morrison’s keynote compositions. It’s here that Morrison’s idiosyncratic genius pulls forth. Using spoken word, moments of hesitation and imagery from earlier songs, for eight minutes Morrison follows a rhythmic pulse as inevitable as a flowing river. He caps himself with the final medley, “It’s All in the Game” and “You Know What They’re Writing About,” that seamlessly segues and eventually dissolves into intimate whispers. Essential.

A great way to close the 70's (5 stars)
One of his best (from 1979)- with classic songs he does in concert such as Healing has Begun and All in the Game & Bright Side of the Road. Has a touch of English folk with the fiddle. Full Force Gale is also a solid number. A touch slick in parts, but so what.

We were born before the wind (3 stars)
i have read alot of your reviews, and the dissapointment of ITUNES why there is no Into The Mystic on this album? answer its not on this CD it's on Moondance. please people get your albums write, But anyhow, Into The Music good album with it ending the 70's not his best but not his worst, There is about 10 better albums than this but for you van fans it's a must

Soulful and Moving (5 stars)
Frankly, I couldn't care less about the first 6 tracks on this album, but tracks 7-10 absolutely blow me away. Listen to them as a piece and you too may be moved by the beauty you find here. Van's output over the years has been, shall we say, uneven in its quality. However the second half of this collection shows him performing at heights that equal anything else he has done. "You Know What They Are Writing About" may be my favori

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected...
