Nearing their thirtieth year of recording, Aerosmith beg the question: Where else can they go? Even after they reinvented themselves for the ‘80s and the ‘90s, Aerosmith are still finding new ways to update and refine their classic formula. In some ways Just Push Play is their most adventurous album in years. “Beyond Beautiful” is driven by a chorus of tribal percussion, while “Just Push Play” incorporates the throbbing pulse of electronica into the band’s signature strut. Even as they modernize their sound, they also use Just Push Play to revisit some of their earliest influences. “Under My Skin” revisits the tuneful psychedelia of the Beatles circa Magical Mystery Tour, while “Outta Your Head” and “Light Inside” feel like supercharged takes on the Yardbirds and Cream, the bands that Aerosmith loved as teenagers. The large number of fans who love Aerosmith for their extravagant ballads will be more than satisfied with “Luv Lies” and “Fly Away from Here.” But the album’s highlight is the gleaming “Jaded,” which matches one of Joe Perry’s sweetest, wiliest riffs with one of Steven Tyler’s catchiest choruses.
