Our Review

The band would go on to polish and refine its all-encompassing sound, but even if they had never released another album, this would still stand as one of the era’s most unique and exciting vocal R&B albums. The influence of Curtis Mayfield is strong — never a bad thing, and pretty much inevitable for a Chicago group from this era — especially on “They Don’t See,” “Remember the Children” and “I’d Rather Have You.” At the same time there are several songs that are so unique they could have only been authored by Maurice White and company. “Mom” is a sublime tribute to motherhood with a slightly ominous tone to it, while the handful of interludes gives White the chance to explore his diverse musical interests: free jazz, Dixieland, and orchestral composition. To cap it off, the band turns in exceptional covers of two unlikely choices: Bread’s “Make It With You” and Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.” Both are presented in visionary arrangements. But the centerpiece is “Power,” an eight-minute proto-disco eruption that begins with a lone kalimba and climaxes with screaming guitars and pulsating percussion.

More Great Early EWF (4 stars)
The early Earth Wind & Fire songs deserve a lot more attention than they have received. As one of the early, early fans of their wildly creative side, I recommend Mom, if you can pick only one track off this album. But there's a lot of great music here.

After all these years.... (5 stars)
....this is the album with all the incredible music introduced me to EW&F and been a loyal fan ever since. The compositions, lyrics (w/ MEANING), instrumentals, vocals were just beyond creative.......GENIUS!! This is TRUE music.

EWF at Their Best (5 stars)
As a 16-year old about to enter college in 1972, this album to me was (and still is) the best Earth Wind and Fire album ever. Yes, EWF has had gigantic commercial successes, but I've been a firm believer that when an artist or group is trying to make it, their work is vastly superior (from a creative standpoint) to the work they produce once they've made it. Listen to Earth Wind and Fire's trumpets and beautiful melodies on 'Mom' contrast

Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Lead singer Philip Bailey gave EWF an extra dimension with his...
