Our Review

Otis Redding and the Stax-Volt Revue headed to Europe in March 1967 to spread their Memphis soul to eager, awaiting audiences. These two performances, a seven song set at Finsbury Park Astoria in London and a ten song set at the Olympia Theatre in Paris (where there was no 11 pm curfew), feature Stax’s in-house band, Booker T. and the MGs and the Mar-Keys. Only select tracks have previously seen limited release as part of obscure collections, including the long out-of-print Stax Volt In Europe, Vol. 3. Now, presented as complete performances, they capture the incredible energy and untouchable vocal talents of one of the finest soul singers of any era. Redding feeds off the crowd and has never sounded more enthused, smashing through the highlights of his emerging catalog with “Shake” and “Respect,” adding a horn-fueled punch to the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction)” and the Beatles’ “Day Tripper. When he slows down for “Try a Little Tenderness,” it’s a heart-stopping performance that builds to cathartic heights. The recording was originally overseen by legendary engineer Tom Dowd; this remix and re-master is top-notch.

Soul master at the peak of his powers (5 stars)
Redding’s live performances of the mid-60s are surprisingly well documented. Individual pieces of his work on Stax’s package tours of Europe can be heard on Live in Europe, The Stax/Volt Revue: Live in London, the Ace Records collection 1,000 Volts of Stax, and the DVD Stax/Volt Revue Live in Norway 1967. His stateside performances have turned up on several Monterey Pop artifacts, and two albums worth of tracks document his shows In Pers

What A Gift! (5 stars)
I am totally in heaven hearing this true talent performing live. What a voice! I feel like I am back in time and at the venue with Otis front and center. His voice simply ooozes with soul and emotion. That is something that I rare to hear these days. But there are some new artists that give you the true meaning of soul and artistry like...Jazmine Sulliven with "Fearless", Nikkole with "Creolepatra" and Noel Gourdin w

OTIS LIVES (5 stars)
Memphis - London - Paris... He'll pass away before the release of "Sittin' By The Dock of the Bay." But his STAX of Classic R&B hits will Live on FOREVEVER! This is the man who blew away the Motntery Rock Festival & woke up the world's eyes to the R&B groove... But before that - he conquered Europe with these two electrifying shows. She a Little R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the one the only OTIS REDDING! & then Try a Lit

Biography

Born: September 09, 1941 in Dawson, GA
Genre: R&B/Soul
Years Active: '60s

One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern "deep soul" — hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. He was also the most consistent exponent of the Stax sound, cutting his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His death at the age of 26 was tragic not just because he seemed on the verge of breaking through...
