A Nice Surprise (4 stars)
I am not a big Styx fan but I can across this while downloading some songs from my youth an I must admit, it's pretty good. I had forgotten that these guys CAN play guitar. I especially like the cover tunes. "Can't find my way home" is especially strong and is a refreshing take on a classic tune. As for "no Dennis" well.....its nice to hear rock music from Styx. Styx: Live Session EP (5 stars)
OK believe it or not my last name is DeYoung! No! Really! OK, so who needs Dennis? The current line up of Styx rocks. I saw them in 1977 and was hooked. I've been fortunate to see them twice since 2000. If you haven't seen them in recent years you are cheating yourself. These songs are a good barometer of the current band. Styx doesn't need Dennis DeYoung to be Styx. Tommy and JY carry the torch quite well, and the keyboardist, Lawrence Gowan, who sings in Dennis' place, sounds just like him. I was blown away when I saw them in concert, and they were just like I remembered them from the late '70s. Give a listen. If you're a real Styx fan, you'll love it!

Biography

Formed: 1970 in Chicago, IL
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Although they began as an artsy prog rock band, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for bombastic rockers and soaring power ballads. The seeds for the band were planted in another Chicago band during the late '60s, the Tradewinds, which featured brothers Chuck and John Panozzo (who played bass and drums, respectively), as well as acquaintance Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards). By the dawn of the '70s, the group...
