Maladroit – WeezerView More By Weezer Our ReviewWhile Weezer leader Rivers Cuomo sports a detached, loner pose that suggests a deep-seated inability to socialize with others, his songs reach out and touch his audience with their emotionally ambiguous honesty and — most importantly — their undeniable catchiness. Cuomo has cited KISS as a major influence on his work and one easily hears KISS’s merge of forceful hard rock and shameless pop in Cuomo’s writing. For Weezer’s fourth album, Cuomo and company make a quick break with an opening trilogy packed with a solid crunch of rhythm guitar and harmonies (“American Gigolo,” “Dope Nose,” “Keep Fishin’”) that draw immediate attention with their intensity. Though little more than a half-hour, Maladroit covers a great deal of territory. ‘80s alt-gods the Cure and Dinosaur Jr. are recalled in the whimpering melodies and elliptical moan of the slow-burning ballad “Death and Destruction,” the overcharged volume of “Slob,” and the giddy “Lovecats” bounce of “Burndt Jamb.” “Possibilities” tilts towards generic hardcore, but “Love Explosion” makes good use of a cheesy ‘80s hard rock guitar solo to color the wall of the band’s block guitar chords.. Customer ReviewsHarder Weezer (5 stars)Right from the get-go, Rivers wants to let old Weezer fans know that this isn't him trying to please anybody; as "American Gigolo" says, "If you hate this, I can't blame you." To know the album you should probably know two things: first, Rivers loves KISS and played in a hair metal band a few years prior to Weezer; second, Rivers self produced this album, which keeps it loose and rocking the whole time. The album is lit Some of their Best Work (4 stars) First of all, let me start by saying I now own every Weezer album, besides the Deluxe Edition of the Blue Album (but soon that too, hopefully!). This album has some of Weezer's best instrumental work, and the powerful drum intros and heavy guitar riffs and solos are far from the simple poppy chords found on the Green Album and most of Make Believe. There is a good mix of classic Weezer instruments and vocals with more modern Weezer lyrics a Arguably one of their best albums (5 stars) I often debate on whether this album or "Pinkerton" is their best (often times I'll go with "Pinkerton") but this album is definitely not to be overlooked. If you do overlook it, you're missing out on some of Weezer's catchiest, most hard-rocking stuff ever. BiographyFormed: 1993 in Los Angeles, CAGenre: Alternative Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s As one of the most popular groups to emerge in the post-grunge alternative rock aftermath, Weezer received equal amounts of criticism and praise for their hook-heavy guitar pop. Drawing from the heavy power pop of arena rockers like Cheap Trick and the angular guitar leads of the Pixies, Weezer leavened their melodies with doses of '70s metal learned from bands like Kiss. What truly set the band apart, though, was their geekiness. None of the members of Weezer, especially leader Rivers Cuomo, were...
