Our Review

In 1972 CCR was just Stu Cook, Doug Clifford and John Fogerty, whose brother Tom quit after having been denied more creative roles in the band. Mardi Gras was CCR’s final studio album — they broke up after its release. John Fogerty has stated in interviews that after Tom’s departure, both Cook and Clifford demanded to write and produce their own songs, which they did here (Fogerty was the band’s sole singer and main songwriter up to this point). Cook and Clifford claim Fogerty was creatively tapped out and asked them to jump in. Either way you spin it, Mardi Gras plays like three different bands in one album. Though it failed commercially, there are some buried gems here that shine especially brighter with these noticeably (but tastefully) remastered versions — the driving “Sweet Hitch-Hiker” sounds like young CCR with its bayou boogie and the rootsy “Someday Never Comes” is an awesome ballad. Cook’s “Take It Like a Friend” is a hip and swampy garage-rocker while “Door to Door” sounds like Skip Battin-era Byrds. Clifford’s “What Are You Gonna Do” rocks soulfully like a Delaney & Bonnie rave-up.

“A Buried Treasure” (3 stars)
The departure of Tom Fogerty from Creedence Clearwater Revial saw the arrival of the bands final studio effort, “Mardi Gras”. This quirky, yet catchy album feels less like CCR’s swansong album and more like the beginning of almost an entirely new band. At first listen “Mardi Gras” seems to come out of nowhere. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason for it. There are only a hand full of John Fogerty tunes here. Most noteworthy “So

Great music (4 stars)
I have to admit, this is not CCRs best album, but this is still a great album to listen to. This album has no "big hit" songs, but it is music that I can sit down and listen to and honestly say, "there is not a bad song on here." I just Love CCRs bluesy rock sound and you can see it in this album. This is a great album by a great band.

the reason this album is not good (2 stars)
just look at who wrote which songs and then revise your opinion of the "ccrevisited" band

Biography

Formed: 1967 in El Cerrito, CA
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '60s, '70s

At a time when rock was evolving further and further away from the forces that had made the music possible in the first place, Creedence Clearwater Revival brought things back to their roots with their concise synthesis of rockabilly, swamp pop, R&B, and country. Though CCR was very much a group in their tight, punchy arrangements, their vision was very much singer, songwriter, guitarist, and leader John Fogerty's. Fogerty's classic compositions for Creedence both evoked enduring images of Americana...
