Our Review

Recorded at an Atlanta large-venue show in 1959, Ray Charles in Person catches the man and his band in a fiery, varied program of R&B burners (an impossibly slow, lengthy “Drown in My Own Tears,” an erotic, near-meltdown “Night Time is the Right Time” and, of course, “What’d I Say”) and big-band showcases (“Frenesi,” “Yes, Indeed!”). Much has been written about the apocalyptic feel of Charles shows of this era and this album, simply, is a monster. The give-and-take between Brother Ray and his audience is more subdued, but as timeless, as that heard on James Brown’s Live at the Apollo – and certainly In Person is as much a classic in its own right. Meltdown? What a lovely way to burn.

Customer Reviews

Ray Charles In Person (5 stars)
This is the definitive Ray Charles concert that captures the structure and spirit of his soul!

Ray Charles In Person (5 stars)
Not only is Ray great at this point in his career, but his band is off the chain. The 2 jazz tunes, Frenesi and The Spirit-Feel, shows some solid writing and playing. This band is well trained...really great stuff here.

This is the best album he ever recorded (5 stars)
Ray recorded his music for decades, but never surpassed this first, seminal recording.

Biography

Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis...
