Our Review

Dunked in reggae narco-grooves and coated with SoCal swagger, Sublime's socially conscious, self-titled album captured the promise of this party trio. Unfortunately, it would be their last recording. Two months before its release, lead singer/chief songwriter Brad Nowell died of a heroin overdose. What a loss. Throughout the album, broad strokes of "third wave" ska mix with swabs of dub, slashes of grinding punk, and spongy reggae. The band slathered on styles, scooping one on top of another to create new musical assemblages. The result: a unique sound that could sustain punk energy and dopey grooves equally. Lyrically direct, Sublime jumps from the profoundly mundane day-in-our-life diary of "Garden Grove" to love redemption on the infectious "What I Got" to progressive social concerns on songs such as the roots pulser "Pawn Shop" and the driving "Wrong Way." It's all feels like one big party, for which Nowell paid the consequences.

Sublime:40 OZ. TO FREEDOM (5 stars)
this cd is probably one of the best cd's you could ever buy if your into the whole so cal rock/reggae scence....the thing this album has is that they sound differente in a good way in almost all there songs, not like coldplay were all there songs have the same beat and are quit boring but this album mostly contains punk rock from the 90's (when it was good) none of this MCR or Fallout Boy stuff it also has great beats with mixing in some rap

Sad (5 stars)
Sublime's sound was rooted in the genius of Bradley Nowell. While the band was comprised of excellent musicians like Eric Wilson on bass and Bud Gaugh on drums, Nowell was the compass and vision. The band was never the same after his loss and neither was the music world. I can picture Bradley up there, with Lou dog, looking down on his family and finally at peace. Brad, you are loved, man.

"Sublime", truly sublime (4 stars)
The album Sublime is definitely a wonderful piece of art. It integrates aspects of reggae, rap, and rock to produce catchy tunes and memorable songs that will stick with you for a long time. Their songs usually talk about the more depressing aspects of life: riots, jail, child prostitution, love and even death. This group tells a lot about another side of life with its intelligent lyrics and toe-tapping beats. Dont hesitate to listen to thi

Formed in 1988 as a garage punk band, Sublime rose to fame in the mid-'90s on the back of the California punk explosion engendered by Green Day and the Offspring, though Sublime boosted their punk influences with heavy elements of reggae and ska. The band released only two albums during its first seven years, and finally found mainstream success with a self-titled release in 1996. It proved to...
