Great "Young Aretha" (5 stars)
Lately, Aretha Franklin has been easy to respect, but hard to love. Her diva persona and tendency to perform with pre-packaged "soul", can be off-putting. But listen to young Aretha sing the songs in this compilation. You'll hear innocence and nuance, power and glory. This is Aretha as a vocal artist, leading the listener on a journey to varying places and emotions. Some of the arrangements are approriately old-fashioned. Som

Great to hear again --cleaned up & clearly! (5 stars)
I have some of these songs from a previous compilation before the industry cleaned up the sound on old recordings, and this all sounds great like they were meant to sound. There are hints of her greatness that we all witnessed with the Atlantic recordings -- but this is also some great stuff. You can tell on some of the songs she wanted to cut loose but the producers obviously squandered her soul then. Sure there was greater stuff to come,
