Our Review

Earth, Wind & Fire didn’t just record hits — the band created an entire cosmos of its own. Spirit (1976) offers a particularly seamless unity of medium and message, wrapping its inspirational content around some of the most sizzling grooves of its era. The dense yet supple arrangements of these tracks are filled with insistent horns, thrumming bass lines and rippling currents of percussion — tunes like “On Your Face” and “Saturday Nite” raise the art of funk to rarified heights. EW&F’s innate elegance comes through on such ballads as the silky-smooth “Imagination” and the uplifting title number, both vehicles for Philip Bailey’s falsetto sorcery. From its Broadway-esque melodic contours to small touches like Maurice White’s kalimba on “Biyou,” the album is rich with sonic detail. But it’s the big themes of earthly brotherhood and spiritual renewal — expressed most fervently in “Burnin’ Bush” — that matter most here. Of all EW&F’s releases, this one may come nearest to fulfilling the band’s lofty vision. An ambitious mix of sensuous rhythms, intricate musicianship and idealistic testimony, Spirit speaks to the body and beckons the soul.

One the Greatest of All Time (5 stars)
Growing up in the mid-70's, along with Head to the Sky, That's the Way of the World, and this album it was hard pressed not to be inspired in every which way but loose. The collective consciousness contrasted to one of my other all-time bands of this era the Ohio Players and Slave to give the best ballads, R&B, and funk with some jazz thrown in. If you were in your early to mid-teens like I was back then you were treated to some of the

Great Concert! (5 stars)
I saw this amazing group when they toured to promote this album. They played at Washington State University, and the stage was designed just like the front of this album, and when the time came for the concert to start, the front of the pyramids opened and lowered to form a huge ramp, with the musicians within the pyramid and the singers walking down the ramp. It was a memorable experience, to be sure. My date and I set up a tent at a campgr

Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Lead singer Philip Bailey gave EWF an extra dimension with his...
