Not content with success as a singles artist, he was determined to create extended works that went beyond typical pop restrictions. Tap Root Manuscript reflected this desire — or, to be precise, half of it did. Side One featured self-contained tracks like “Cracklin’ Rosie” (a carefree ode that sold a million copies as a single), “Done Too Soon” (an uplifting meditation on mortality) and an emotive cover of “He’s Not Heavy… He’s My Brother.” Diamond delivers these tunes with his usual gravitas and vigor. Side Two was devoted to “The African Trilogy,” a song-cycle touching upon Biblical themes within a tribal musical context. Combining African string and percussion instruments with gospel choirs, Diamond moves from childlike playfulness (“I Am The Lion”) to mature reverence (“Missa”). The centerpiece of the trilogy is “Soolaimon,” a stirring celebration of the Spirit delivered with revivalist fervor. Diamond continued to refine his symphonic pop ideas as the decade wore on, but Tap Root Manuscript caught his artistic ambitions at their freshest and most joyful.. Customer ReviewsTaproot Manuscript (5 stars)Listening to a recent (12/05) interview w/ Neil Diamond I was reminded of how much my life revolved around his music. Taproot Manuscript appeared at a seminal time in my life and listening to it again evoked all of the original emotions, dreams and desires I experienced the first time I heard it when I was young. At it's release it was "out there" with only a couple of songs that would ever find airplay, but the risk Diamond took w WOW (5 stars) I grew up on Neil Diamond's music and this album was one of my favorites. I am young by his fans standards (Im only 25) but his music on this album is amazing I love Soolamon and I am the Lion. Excelent!! Amazing!! Anyone who is just getting into his music has to check out this album! Childhood Memories (4 stars) My parents played this album all the time. My sister repeatedly asked for Childsong and I am the Lion. I grew up on Neil remembering Hot August Night. I've seen him in concert 3 times. If you want to complete your Neil Diamond collection at this price you must download this album. This is an entertainer's Entertainer. Why Neil isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is ridiculous to me. Even Elvis loved his music.
