Our Review

MGMT’s Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden are clearly gifted musicians with an uncanny knack for streamlining the sometimes bewildering musical burblings of the independent underground into admirably intelligent, radio ready pop. MGMT’s 2005 EP Time To Pretend, was recorded while the pair were students at Wesleyan University and proves definitively that this precocious duo are no mere major label pawns. If anything the more synth-driven, less rock-oriented aesthetic of Time to Pretend suits the duos knowing pop songs better than the sometimes ostentatious production of Oracular Spectacular. Two of the songs here, “Time to Pretend” and the nostalgic ode to childhood innocence “Kids” would appear on Oracular Spectacular in more polished form, but the scrappy, invigorating versions of these songs assayed here are hardly redundant.

i like this ep's version of kids better :D

This EP is a must-have. While the two most popular songs -- Time to Pretend and Kids -- are not arranged as well as they appear on Oracular Spectacular, the other four songs are great. Love the sexiness of their lyrics: "It's cool, you're touchin' my hand," (Boogie Down) "I found blood and I saw stars all in the backseat of your car/And I told you it was love," (Indie Rokkers). Edgy, indie sound; danceable.

Wow (5 stars)
I really suggest listening to / buying Indie Rokkers and Boogie Down. I usually don't like this kind of music but there's something about MGMT that makes it sound amazing. :D

Genre: Alternative
Years Active: '00s, '10s

Finding an unlikely middle point between Suicide's hostile, proto-electro punk art noise and the sardonic, pop-friendly sound of the Flaming Lips, MGMT started as electroclash musical terrorists but quickly grew into an eclectic, brainy pop group with psychedelic overtones. MGMT first formed in 2002, during Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden's freshman year as art students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. The band was initially known as the Management, and its shows consisted mostly...
